Pokémon são criaturas peculiares com uma vasta gama de habilidades e aparências diferentes; muitas pessoas, conhecidas como treinadores de Pokémon, os capturam e treinam, muitas vezes com a intenção de lutar contra outros. O jovem Satoshi não só sonhava em se tornar um treinador Pokémon, mas também um “Mestre Pokémon”, e ao completar 10 anos, ele finalmente tem a chance de tornar esse sonho realidade. Infelizmente para ele, todos os três Pokémon disponíveis para treinadores iniciantes já foram reivindicados e apenas Pikachu, um Pokémon rebelde do tipo Elétrico, permanece. No entanto, este encontro casual marcaria o início de uma amizade para toda a vida e de uma aventura épica! Partindo em uma jornada para se tornarem os melhores, Satoshi e Pikachu viajam por regiões lindas e extensas com seus amigos Kasumi, um treinador do tipo Água, e Takeshi, um treinador do tipo Pedra. Mas o perigo espreita em cada esquina. A infame Equipe Rocket está sempre por perto, tentando roubar Pokémon poderosos através de esquemas nefastos. Caberá a Satoshi e seus amigos frustrar seus esforços enquanto ele também se esforça para ganhar os oito Pokémon Gym Badges necessários para desafiar a Liga Pokémon e, eventualmente, reivindicar o título de Mestre Pokémon.
