Medabots – robôs poderosos que recebem inteligência artificial por meio de “medalhas” especiais – atendem aos caprichos de seu dono. Eles são mais comumente usados em "Robbatling", um esporte de combate popular onde dois medabots se enfrentam. Na sua forma profissional, os Medafighters utilizam os seus Medabots para se qualificarem para o Torneio Mundial e lutarem entre a elite para conquistar o título de campeão. O aluno do ensino fundamental Ikki Tenryou acaba de ganhar seu primeiro Medabot: Metabee, um modelo desatualizado sem medalha. Felizmente, porém, Ikki consegue encontrar uma medalha no rio próximo; mas quando Ikki coloca isso na cabeça de Metabee, este começa a exibir um comportamento estranho. De temperamento explosivo e rebelde, ele se recusa a obedecer às ordens de Ikki. No entanto, para subir na classificação para o Torneio Mundial, Ikki e Metabee devem primeiro aprender a trabalhar juntos, não importa quão difícil a perspectiva possa parecer…
