Quando um portão para outro mundo se abre repentinamente na Terra, a cidade de Mikado é invadida por estranhas criaturas conhecidas como “Vizinhos”, seres maliciosos imunes ao armamento tradicional. Em resposta à sua chegada, uma organização chamada Agência de Defesa da Fronteira foi criada para combater a ameaça do vizinho através de armas especiais chamadas “Gatilhos”. Embora vários anos tenham se passado desde a abertura do portão, os Vizinhos ainda são uma ameaça e os membros da Fronteira permanecem em guarda para garantir a segurança do planeta. Apesar desta situação delicada, membros em treinamento, como Osamu Mikumo, não estão autorizados a usar seus Gatilhos fora da sede. Mas quando o misterioso novo aluno da sua turma é arrastado para uma área proibida por valentões, eles são atacados pelos vizinhos, e Osamu não tem escolha a não ser fazer o que acredita ser certo. Para sua surpresa, no entanto, o estudante transferido Yuuma Kuga dá um jeito rápido nos alienígenas, revelando que ele é um vizinho humanóide disfarçado.
