Kyou kara Maou! gira em torno de Yuri Shibuya, um adolescente japonês comum. Um dia, Yuri vê um colega sendo assediado por agressores. Graças a esta intervenção, seu amigo consegue escapar, mas infelizmente Yuri se torna o novo alvo dos agressores no processo e tem a cabeça enfiada no banheiro. Mas em vez de água, a sanita contém um portal giratório que o suga para outro mundo, em grande parte semelhante à Europa medieval. Lá, ele é informado de que ele se tornará o próximo Rei Demônio devido aos seus cabelos e olhos pretos, características possuídas apenas pela linhagem real do demônio. A chegada de Yuri é recebida com algum ceticismo por alguns dos demônios, que o consideram indigno de ser seu rei. No entanto, depois que Yuri vence um duelo utilizando seus poderes mágicos, os demônios lentamente começam a reconhecê-lo como seu monarca. Yuri agora deve aprender o que é preciso para ser um verdadeiro Rei Demônio, enquanto tenta manter a paz entre demônios e humanos neste estranho novo reino.
