Edo é uma cidade que abrigou o vigor e a ambição dos samurais de todo o país. No entanto, após a rendição do Japão feudal a poderosos estrangeiros conhecidos como “Amanto”, essas aspirações parecem agora inatingíveis. Com o outrora influente xogunato reconstruído como um governo fantoche, é aprovada uma nova lei que proíbe imediatamente todas as espadas em público. Entra Gintoki Sakata, um homem excêntrico de cabelos grisalhos que sempre carrega uma espada de madeira e mantém sua estatura de samurai, apesar da proibição. Como fundador da Yorozuya, uma pequena empresa para biscates, Gintoki frequentemente embarca em esforços para ajudar outras pessoas – embora geralmente de maneiras bastante estranhas e imprevistas. Auxiliado por Shinpachi Shimura, um menino de óculos que supostamente está aprendendo o caminho do samurai; Kagura, uma garota moleca com força sobre-humana e um apetite infinito; e Sadaharu, seu cachorro gigante que adora morder a cabeça das pessoas, os Yorozuya encontram de tudo, desde realeza alienígena até brigas com gangues locais no mundo em constante mudança de Edo.
